Dr. David H. Atkinson, Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Idaho
presenting the
 "The Cassini/Huygen Exploration of Saturn and Titan"

Dr. David H Atkinson is currently a Co-Investigator on the NASA/ESA (European Space Agency) Cassini Doppler Wind Experiment to measure winds in the atmosphere of Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, and is chairing the ESA Huygens Probe Descent Trajectory Working Group.  In 1995, Dr. Atkinson performed the first measurements of the very deep atmospheric winds on Jupiter as the Principle Investigator on the Galileo Doppler Wind Experiment. 
Dr. David H Atkinson is leading a team of engineers and scientists looking at the possibilities for future atmospheric entry probe missions to Neptune, and is a co-investigator on a team proposing a future entry probe/lander mission to Venus.

Aviation Scholarships:

Aerospace Workforce Development Group has awarded 3 Aviation Scholarships (VICA) to Burlington Aviation Technical School in So. Burlington, VT.  A total award of $3000 in three awards of $1000 for each student.

The recipients of the VSGC Aviation Technology Scholarships:

*Alex Lyman has been chosen to attend the National Skills USA Competition in Kansas City, MO.

NASA STUDENT INVOLVEMENT PROGRAM(NSIP)
We are proud to announce that two Vermont home schooled students have received 1st Place in the National competition of the (NSIP) NASA Student Involvement Program,
Aerospace Technology Engineering Challenge.  The competition is for grades 5-8.

This honor goes to the students:  Alexandre Caillot & Benjamin Turcotte
and their teacher, Mrs. Susan Turcotte
The title of this years competition is "The American Rocket Scientist TRS".

These students will be attending Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center this summer.  Recognition was given at the statehouse in the Governor's Press Conference on April 29, 2004 at 1:00pm. Governor James Douglas presented a certificate from the State of Vermont and Laurel C. Zeno of Vermont Space Grant Consortium presented a NASA plaque to each student, the teacher and a Recognition plaque of their scholastic achievements to be placed publicly to encourage others to pursue their goals.

VERMONT AVIATION CLUB

A new club is forming that has been initiated by two 11 year old students,
 Ben Martin & Amanda Leffler,  who have gone through ACE Camp. 
Mark Goudreau, a Drug & Alcohol Abuse Prevention Officer for the VT National Guard and Laurel C.  Zeno of Vermont Space Grant Consortium are collaborating in the organization of a Developmental Board to facilitate this program.  The goal is to form clubs in all Vermont schools with monthly meetings for Grades 4-6.  The students want to offer the opportunity to other students to become
"Blue Yonder Junior Aviators".

NASA GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER

2003 NASA ACADEMY RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

Jeffrey (Jeff) Kujawa, is a mechanical engineering graduate student at the University of Vermont. Jeff was selected 5th from 400 applicants to attend the 2003 NASA Academy, as a Research Associate (RA) at Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD. Jeff conducted research on Monopropellent Supersonic Microthrusters, under the supervision of a NASA Principal Investigator in the Propulsion Branch. During his time at NASA Academy, he traveled to present a 10 page conference proceedings labeled “Numerical Simulation of Supersonic Flow in Realistic MEMS Nozzle Geometries with Heat Loss,” at the 33rd Annual AIAA Computational Fluid Dynamics Conference in Orlando, FL. He then presented an overview to his peers when he returned to NASA Academy. Jeff is continuing his graduate research at UVM, in collaboration with the NASA PI and his faculty advisor, a VT-NASA EPSCoR researcher.


Mark Miller of UVM spoke of his partipation in the UVM CricketSat Project - part of the Crawl, Walk, Run and Fly Projects, administered by the NASA Space Grant Consortia and is sponsored and coordinated by VSGC.

AFFILIATE & COLLABORATIVE PROGRAMS

A collaboration between Burlington Aviation Tech School (BTC)and Vermont Technical College (VTC)
will offer an Aerospace Engineering degree program.  VSGC was instrumental in funding a prep grant to initiate this program.


Burlington Aviation Technology School
The airframe, powerplant, and avionics curriculum includes adult programs, as well as year 10-13 classes. Applications are now being accepted. To see details: Click above for link to BTC Aviation Technology School or on VSGC Affiliates.  The Air National Guard has donated a F-15 engine, worth $3million dollars,
to the school to  be used in training.  The school has received federal certification as an accredited school.
Graduation of this year's class will be July 1, 2004 (see calendar) and new class begins July 6, 2004
